CVAC heating up July in Duncan with new and established artists

Visitors can enjoy two art openings on July 17

The Cowichan Valley Arts Council has lots going on in July.

Visitors can enjoy two art openings on July 17 with "Stepping Out" by NC Meijers Drees and "Introducing: Emerging Artists". Both receptions run from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the CVAC galleries in the Cowichan Community Centre. The events are free and everyone is welcome.

Stepping Out runs from July 11 to 31 in the Main Gallery and is a lifetime retrospective by artist N.C. Drees.

"Born between two volcanoes on the Island of Java, Drees combined artistic development with a scientific career as a geologist for Geological Survey of Canada," said a press release for the show. "Drees presents a selection of watercolours, artist-pulled prints – intaglio, woodblock and rubber stamp as well as stencil and spray pieces. Drees builds 1:50 ship models — two of which are in a museum in Holland, with another is on display at Stepping Out."

A selection of framed and unframed prints will be for sale.

Meanwhile in the Annex Gallery from July 8 to 28 viewers can enjoy Introducing: Emerging Artists, which exhibits a selection of works by artists just emerging into the professional market.

"Guests will enjoy works in charcoal, clay, acrylic, oil and multi-media," said the release. "Contributing artist must have recently completed post-secondary arts studies or mentorship programs. See new talent and glimpse the future of art."

And finally, on July 27 CVAC's Outdoor Art Market returns for 2024 on Station and Craig Streets in downtown Duncan from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 30 artists are on site with their own creations.

"Shoppers will find a treasure trove of art for sale – clothing, jewelry, sculpture, flutes, paintings, photography, prints and more. Something for every taste and décor."
