The Greater Victoria Police Chorus will prove that they are there to protect, to serve, and to sing at the Duncan Christian Reformed Church on March 15.
Presented by the Nowruz Syrian Refugee Sponsorship the concert, which runs from 2 to 4 p.m., is a fundraiser where all proceeds will go to the Abed family who are being sponsored by the Nowruz Syrian Refugee Sponsorship group.
The Greater Victoria Police Chorus was first founded in 1984 as a way to promote fellowship among police officers of the region, and has extended to include officers from across Canada and overseas, as well as civilian members since. The chorus has developed into a means for police officers and the public to relate in an informal manner. Comprised of mostly retired police officers and musicians they have entertained the masses while offering up their talents, for a minimal fee, to various community projects, including fundraising groups such as NSRS.
"While entertaining the audience with their mix of popular music they also provide a snapshot of another side of police life, removed from the law enforcement for which they are known," said Nowruz Syrian Refugee Sponsorship group member Pat Smith. "I am one of 10 members who continues to fundraise in order to reunite the Abed family with the Ali family who are already here in Duncan."
Under the guidance of a professional music director and supported by professional musicians, the chorus now includes a popular quartet, as well as several soloists, which not only enhances the experience for the audience, but also for its members. The GVPC will be performing a variety of music genres ranging from choral selections, spirituals, and popular ballads to rock and roll, with some diverse standouts including 'Amazing Grace', 'Sloop John B,' and 'Sweet Caroline'.
The sweet sounds of this chorus have been heard across Vancouver Island where they have been invited to perform at community functions in churches, retirement homes, Legions, and other settings. They have also taken their act across B.C., Alberta, and even in the United States and Europe.
See the police in a new light as they perform for the community with a concert that will be a positive light for the Abed family. Admission is $25. For tickets, contact Pat Smith at 250-252-9243 or by emailing her at leeandpat2@shaw.ca.
