Stars of the Future shine brightly at Chemainus Classical Concerts

Young musicians from the Victoria Conservatory of Music to perform in Chemainus

You know teenagers: always glued to their phones, rolling their eyes at adults and constantly playing Beethoven.

At least part of that will be true when the young artists of the Victoria Conservatory of Music's Collegium Program perform in Stars of the Future, next month’s much-anticipated edition of Chemainus Classical Concerts at St. Michael’s Church on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.

Artistic co-director of the concert series Rykie Avenant promises attendees will be treated to an exciting program and raves about the performers and the collegium.

“These talented young musicians are brought together with outstanding teachers to pursue musical excellence in a lively collaborative environment,” Avenant says. “Members of this program consistently win at local, provincial and national levels, obtain scholarships to prestigious universities such as Juilliard and the Glenn Gould School and alumni have become members of symphony orchestras in Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Victoria.”

Delivered in an after-school format, the Young Artist Collegium Program is an enriched program for young classical musicians who play piano, string, wind, and brass instruments. It provides an environment for students to develop as soloists and chamber musicians as well as all the necessary tools needed to think critically and work as a team.

The program for Nov. 3 includes movements from Beethoven String Quartet op. 18 no. 1, Beethoven Trio op. 87, Dvorak Piano Trio in E minor, op. 90 (Dumky) and Saint-Saëns Piano Trio in F major, op. 18.

The Annual General Meeting of Chemainus Classical Concerts will take place directly after the concert. Those interested in finding out more about the St. Michael’s Presents…Society, organizers of the popular concert series, are invited to stay for the AGM.
