UPDATED: Gas leak shut down part of downtown Duncan

Streets closed, buildings evacuated

A gas leak shut down part of downtown Duncan for approximately two hours on Thursday, Sept. 14.

The fire department blocked off parts of several streets, including Craig, Kenneth, Ingram and Canada Avenue after reports of the leak.

Officials also evacuated City Hall and a number of nearby businesses.

Duncan fire chief Landis Carmichael said a construction crew was digging up a section of Kenneth Street, close to the intersection of Canada Avenue, at about noon when they accidentally struck a gas line.

He said the Duncan fire department was called in to cordon off the area to allow for workers to access the gas line, and the problem was mostly dealt with by 2 p.m.

“As of 3:30 p.m., a work crew was still working there, but most of the pedestrian and vehicular traffic had resumed,” Carmichael said.

“As well, some customers who use gas in the area were still without gas, but the majority were back online.”
