Cowichan high school bowling program wraps up with awards night

Finnian Stiwich and Danica Lazenby top winners

The Cowichan Valley High School Bowling program finals were held recently and while the league champions and runners-up had been decided previously, the playoffs were still up for grabs.

Lane Tokarek and Harper Chen of team Yin and Yang came through with a plus 86 pins over three games to claim the crown.

Bowler of the Year, Most Improved and league champion for this season, Finnian Stiwich is fresh off his silver medal in singles at the YBC provincials and was one of two of the program’s major award winners, as was his Better Luck Next Time league-winning teammate Danika Lazenby.

Both bowlers were triple crown winners with high singles, high series and high average over the 12-week program.

Stiwich had perfect attendance this year, a 191 single, 530 series, and a 146.64 average, the latter earning him the Denis Linde Memorial Scholarship for his highest average on the men’s side.

Lazenby had a 208 single, 472 series and 135.42 average, the latter the highest average on the female side, which earned her the Bertha Linde Memorial Scholarship for the second consecutive year.

Lazenby also won the high over average single award with plus 74 pins while Stiwich took home the men’s high over average series with plus 101 for three games.

Men’s high over average single went to Lane Tokarek with plus 60 pins while Avalon Mearns had the ladies high over average series at plus 98. Mearns was this year’s Most Improved female winner while she and Emma Jeanne deBree-Kusz were the league runners-up.
