The Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club and Queen Margaret’s School once again played host to the annual Cowichan Valley elementary wrestling playdowns on Feb. 27, and by all accounts, the event was a "huge success" according to organizer and coach Nick Zuback.
The tournament, now in its ninth year, brought together more than 200 young wrestlers from Grades 3 through 7, representing schools across the Cowichan Valley, Port Alberni, and Nanaimo.
“It was fantastic to see so many students participating this year,” Zuback said. “The energy and enthusiasm on the mats were incredible.”
Adding to the event’s success, senior wrestlers stepped up to officiate, keep score, and even coach, demonstrating leadership and a commitment to growing the sport.
QMS wrestled to first place in the team standings, followed closely by École Cobble Hill in second, with George Bonner Elementary rounding out the podium in third.
"A special thank you goes to QMS for hosting such a large and well-organized event and to the parents and families who contributed their time and support to make it a memorable experience for the young athletes," Zuback said.
Looking ahead, the Future Wrestling Stars program for children ages four through 10 will start again in April. For more information, please get in touch with Nick Zuback at nzuback@hotmail.com.
