Cowichan Valley Capitals start 2025 with two wins

Three in a row for streaking Caps

The Cowichan Valley Capitals started back up on a winning note following the holidays with games on Jan. 3 and Jan. 4 in Powell River against the Kings.

In the first of the two-game set, Cowichan's Camden Bajzer led the way with goals in the first and second periods and Brayden Sinclair and Gavin Giesbrecht scored in the second and third respectively for a 4-3 win.

Cowichan out-shot Powell River 33-21 and goalie Dylan Krick stopped 18 to earn the win.

With one win already secured, Cowichan unleashed for five goals in the second game of the weekend for a 5-1 victory.

Bajzer opened the scoring in the second period and Cowichan extended their lead in the third to 4-0 before the Kings got their first of the game.

Camden Charron, Ben Portner, and James Russell all scored in a three-minute span.

Leading 4-1 with just over three minutes to play, Hayden Russell scored Cowichan's fifth and final goal of the game to ice the 5-1 victory.

Liam Sztuska stopped 12 of 13 shots for the win in goal.

The Capitals now sit second in the Coastal Conference standings, just behind the Chilliwack Chiefs.

Ice Chips:

Just prior to the Christmas break, the Cowichan Valley Capitals made a trade with the Spruce Grove Saints. Heading to Alberta were defenders Frederic Deschenes and Luke McCrady in return for D-men Adam Lang and Ryan Harvey.

Lang, from Sherwood Park, Alta., was in his third season with the Saints, amassing four goals and 53 assists for 57 points in 133 with the club. Harvey, a Souffville Ont. product, suited up in 44 games for the Saints over two seasons, posting two goals and 16 assists for 18 points.

Deschenes had a goal and five assists for six points in 16 games with Cowichan while McCrady, earned eight helpers in 29 games with the Caps.

On Dec. 27, the Capitals announced the acquisition of forward Jake Gutwirth for the remainder of the 24/25 season.

Gutwirth, who has seen two games with the U.S. National U18 team, had 14 goals and 21 assists in 29 games with the Northeast Generals of the NAHL (North American Hockey League).
