Snow holds off for annual bonspiel in Duncan

Third annual event a success

The Duncan Curling Club played host to the third annual Men's and Women's Parallel Curling Bonspiel Jan. 16-19 at the Glen Harper Curling Centre.

Unlike last year when portions of the event were derailed by snow storms, the competition went off without a hitch this year, and featured 36 teams: 18 men's teams and 18 women's teams all vying for hand-crafted wooden trophies, cash, and items on a prize table worth more than $5,500 combined.

Round robin play on the Thursday and Friday determined the teams seeding into the gold-, silver-, and bronze-event draws on Saturday and Sunday.

In the end it was skip Karen Thorington's rink that won the women’s gold event, sponsored by A&W, with Grace Predy's rink placing second.

In the women's silver event, sponsored by Hardie Honey, skip Heather Shortill and her rink took the win while Barb Foster's rink was second.

The women’s bronze event, sponsored by Farmer Ben’s Eggs, was won by skip Sheila Percival and her team while Lynn Derry, from the Kerry Park Curling Centre, was the runner up.

Kathy Yu and Barb Foster tied for the women's largest single end score in the round robin play with five. That competition was sponsored by the late Glen Harper's family.

On the men's side, the Duncan Ironworks-sponsored gold event winners were the rink skipped by Wes Craig while Gerald Poelman's rink were the runners-up.

The Leon Signs-sponsored silver event was won by Kevin Miller and crew while John Reeves from Peace Arch Curling Centre in White Rock was second.

Cam Foster's team won the bronze event, which was sponsored by OK Tire. Kevin Lamont's rink was second.

Doug Elliott won the prize for the largest end largest single end score in the round robin play with six. That competition was sponsored by the Tee Box.
