What does it mean to age well? For thousands of British Columbians, the answer lies in staying active, staying social and embracing new challenges – exactly what the 55+ BC Games is all about.
This year, the event heads to Nanaimo, where from Sept. 9 to 13 adults aged 55 and older will participate in B.C.’s largest annual multi-sport event.
With more than 3,000 participants and 25 different sports and activities, the Games are a powerful example of how sport and recreation can enrich our lives, no matter our age.
And these games aren’t just for elite athletes.
“There’s a common misconception that you need to be highly competitive to join, but that’s not true at all,” says Kim Montour, a communications committee member from the BC Seniors Games Society.
“The Games are about participation, not perfection.”
Events range from golf, pickleball and swimming to less physically demanding options like cribbage and carpet bowling. Whether you're rediscovering a favourite pastime or trying something new, there's something for every skill level.
Why it matters
As research continues to show the connection between physical activity and long-term wellness, programs like the 55+ BC Games play an important role in promoting healthy aging. Regular movement can reduce the risk of chronic disease, improve mobility and mental health and even boost cognitive function. What's equally important are the social benefits.
“Loneliness and isolation are real concerns for older adults,” Montour says. “The Games offer a chance to reconnect – with old friends, new faces and a community of people who share similar values.”
Bringing community to life
Every year, the Games rotate between host cities across B.C., and Nanaimo – with its scenic harbour, welcoming spirit and active lifestyle – is ready to shine. The event brings economic benefits, volunteer opportunities and a whole lot of local pride.
Whether you’re looking to compete, volunteer or simply cheer from the sidelines, the 2025 55+ BC Games offers a vibrant, inclusive space to celebrate aging on your own terms.
Registration is now open at 55plusbcgames.org. Don’t just watch – be a part of it.
