My name is Jenni Capps, and I live and work in downtown Duncan. For the past nine years I’ve worked for small locally owned businesses in the downtown area. I work in service and hospitality, connecting with people from different walks of life and having positive interactions with many types of people, every day.

I’ve always been civically engaged within the Cowichan Valley. For several years I was a volunteer with Safe Youth Cowichan, an award-winning, youth-led community safety group. With them I spoke with people all over the region about their safety concerns, worked on potential solutions, then brought that information to local government. Seeing the traction from projects with this group has been immensely rewarding.

I was junior mayor on the city’s youth council for three terms, and went on to become a member of the Community Safety Advisory Commission. I believe I could contribute my knowledge to discussions around improving accessibility, as well as offer some insight on social safety issues.

Some of my other priorities include: sustainability and stewardship of the natural environment; cooperating respectfully with local, provincial, federal, and First Nations leaders; and protecting the unique character of our neighborhoods.

Ideally city council will be made up of individuals with unique experiences, diverse backgrounds, and a variety of skills, so we can each bring something different to the conversation, and most accurately represent the community.

As councillor, I would bring my open mindedness and compassion, my creativity and enthusiasm, and a strong desire to contribute to positive progress in the community where I grew up.

I believe the combination of my personality and experiences makes me a great choice to represent the citizens of Duncan, and am grateful for the opportunity to apply my skills to this exciting challenge.
