Maple Bay and Crofton firehalls were called out to a brush fire in Maple Bay on Thursday, Aug. 11.

The call about a fire at the Kingsview and Donnay drive traffic circle came in at about 11:30 a.m.

North Cowichan’s fire chief Martin Drakeley was on scene and said three fire trucks and 15 firefighters dealt with the fire, which he estimated to be about 30 by 70 feet, and appeared to have it under control within half an hour.

He said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Drakeley said current conditions are extremely dry in the Cowichan Valley, and any fire is a concern as it can spread quickly.

“The small amount of rain that some areas of the Valley experienced last night [Wednesday, Aug. 10] didn’t do much to alleviate our concerns around fire, and wind we’re experiencing right now doesn’t help either,” he said.

“If you’re a smoker, please keep your butts in your vehicle.”
