First Nation looks to ensure health and safety in community

Cowichan Tribes is requiring all of its staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Dec. 1.

A press release from the First Nation said the highly contagious Delta variant is resulting in an increase in both the number and severity of COVID-19 cases in the Cowichan region and across B.C.

The release said many of the staff and community at Cowichan Tribes are at higher risk of complications if they get COVID-19, so to help keep the community and staff safe, the First Nation has mandated that staff be fully vaccinated.

“Protecting the health and safety of our community has been the driving force for all of our actions related to COVID-19,” said Cowichan Tribes Acting Chief Cindy Daniels.

“We especially need to protect our elders, children and vulnerable community members.”

Daniels said the vaccine mandate is just one of the layers of protection at Cowichan Tribes, which include staff wearing face masks, practicing physical distancing and staying home and getting tested when feeling unwell, even with mild symptoms.

“We take our job to provide services to our community seriously,” said Daniels.

“Our vaccine mandate helps ensure the important services our dedicated staff provide to our community can continue safely and uninterrupted.”
