Allenby Road, which has been closed to traffic since November’s flooding caused a landslide that buried that road in debris, will remain closed for the time being.

A statement from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said the road will remain closed until a slope assessment being carried out by Cowichan Tribes can be completed.

“Once assessments are completed and the area is considered safe, the ministry will work with Cowichan Tribes towards re-opening the road,” the statement said.

“No timeline is available at this point. There are multiple detour options for area residents. Travellers should check DriveBC.ca for updates.”

The statement added that following the Allenby Road mudslide event between Miller Road and Boys Road, the ministry’s maintenance contractor cleared all debris from approximately 60 metres of roadway.

Another landslide occurred on Indian Road, which is close to Allenby Road, on Jan. 12 which saw Indian Road closed for the afternoon while ministry workers cut up and removed trees that had slid from the top of the slope onto the road.

The ministry statement said Allenby Road landslide was not connected to the Indian Road slide.
