The application process to identify seven families in the Cowichan Valley who are eligible for new homes through Habitat for Humanity is now open.

The families that are selected by Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island will take possession of new homes in two different locations in the Cowichan Valley.

They include a four-bedroom duplex home on the corner of Glenn Fields Road and Cowichan Lake Road, and two and three-bedroom homes in a six-plex on Jubilee Street.

The duplex home is already under construction and due for completion in December, 2019, while the six-plex is due to break ground in late 2019, with completion anticipated in late 2020.

Marcel Aubin, executive director for HFHMVI, the organization is delighted to officially open the application process for its six-plex build on Jubilee Street.

He said the mix of two and three bedroom homes will serve a diverse range of family groups and Habitat for Humanity is looking forward to receiving applications from local families who are looking for a hand up, not a hand out.

“Due to a change in circumstances for a previously selected family, we are also re-opening the application process for the 4-bedroom, one-half duplex home which is already under way on Glenn Fields Road,” Aubin said.

“We look forward to seeing deserving, hardworking families enjoy the benefits of home ownership in their own Habitat home.”

Habitat for Humanity builds affordable homes for families who wouldn’t otherwise be able to qualify for a conventional mortgage.

Habitat homes are sold to selected families at current market value, with special provisions including no down payment and an interest-free mortgage.

To become a partner family, applicants must demonstrate a need, in that their current housing is inadequate and/or too expensive; the ability to pay, so the family must have steady employment income for the past three years; and a willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity.

Each family is also required to contribute 500 hours of sweat equity on the construction of Habitat homes.

More information about eligibility and how to apply can be found on Habitat’s website at www.habitatmvi.org

The deadline for the receipt of applications is Sept. 6 at 4 p.m.
