Duncan councillor Carol Newington is running for re-election.

Born and raised in Duncan, Newington lives in her family home in the Cairnsmore area with her dog, cat, hens and bees.

“As a tax-paying resident of Duncan, I am invested in this city,” she said.

“I worked at Queen Margaret’s School as an equestrian coach and operations manager until June of 2016,when I retired.”

“In my spare time I volunteer with the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store, the Cowichan Music Festival and Meals on the Ground. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to support Duncan residents on issues that are important to them and to continue to work on the council team.”

Newington said common sense fiscal responsibility is very important as the city grows.

She said infrastructure in the city is aging and council needs to find an economical, long-term solution for the future of the community.

“I will work towards finding solutions for affordable, safe housing in this city that will be of benefit and safety for all the residents, including seniors and families, and the community,” Newington said.

“We must continue to work with the Downtown Business Association to ensure a city core that will be the centre of the Cowichan Valley. Our climate is changing and we also need to find solutions for our water sustainability.”

Newington said that as a former Scouts Canada leader and youth coach, the health, wellness and safety of youth is extremely important to the future and should be supported in this community.

“I also recognize the importance of keeping Duncan free, clean and safe,” she said.

“If you have any thoughts on how to improve our community, I’d love to hear them. I am available at newingtonc@yahoo.ca or 250-709-0469.”
