Cathy Schmidt is running to be a trustee in the Cowichan Valley school district.

She said she had the honour of serving on the board of education for three terms in the past.

“Over the past four years being away from the table, I have been able to gain a greater insight as to why I believe it is time for me to return if the community wishes it to be,” Schmidt said.

“I see mental health for both kids and staff to be a priority and it is time to request from the Ministry of Education a change to the funding formula to reflect the greater needs for support in the area of mental health.”

Schmidt said she is also hearing in the community a growing concern from families for the need for student safety.

“I believe whomever is elected to the board that it is time to bring a resolution to the BC School Trustees Association to address the issues and gain the provincial voice to request change in funding,” she said.

“Twenty-first century learning has made big changes to the way education is delivered and COVID-19 changed the learners and their health. It is time for the funding to reflect the needs and changes so that all students have the chance to succeed.”
