Chase, arrest follow attempted Cowichan car theft

With some help from agencies south of the Malahat, Shawnigan Lake RCMP collared a man believed to be a prolific Cowichan Valley car prowler on Saturday morning.

Police were first called around 6 a.m. after a homeowner in the Cobble Hill area noticed a man breaking into a truck. The homeowner chased the man away, but was quick to jot down the licence number of his green Dodge Neon as he drove away.

The Shawnigan Lake RCMP located the car speeding south toward Victoria, and tried to pull it over, stopping when their attempts were unsuccessful. Once he got to the other side of the Malahat, however, Westshore RCMP located the car and took the 30-year-old driver into custody.

Later that same day, the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP received several reports of thefts from vehicles over the previous night in the Cowichan Bay and Cobble Hill areas. Many suspected stolen items were recovered from the green Neon, and the RCMP are now attempting to get them back in the right hands.
