The long-anticipated community policing office in Chemainus officially opened on May 2.

At the council meeting on May 4, North Cowichan Mayor Al Siebring said there were some staffing issues that had delayed the opening of the office, but a criminology student from Vancouver Island University has been hired to operate it.

He said the community policing office, which is located in the basement of the Visitor Information Centre in the space formerly occupied by the Chemainus Chamber of Commerce, will be open three days a week.

“The office is not wheelchair accessible, but staff are pursuing grant opportunities to provide wheelchair access through the downstair[s] doors at the north end of the building,” Siebring said.
