The Cowichan Valley Basket Society has purchased 5804 Garden St., the property immediately to the south of its current facility at 5810 Garden St.

The society’s soup kitchen and food bank have operated from its Garden Street location for many years.

“Thanks to generous donor support, the CVBS was able to take advantage of this exciting opportunity to acquire much needed additional spaces essential in order to support and improve existing services,” said Lee Smith, chair of the society’s board.

“This purchase presents a tremendous opportunity for future program growth while anchoring provision of food hampers and meals in the current location which is well known, central, easily accessed and supported by the neighborhood. Over the coming months, plans will be developed to allow the two properties to better fulfill the CVBS mission statement: ensuring no individual or family in the Cowichan Valley goes hungry either physically, spiritually or emotionally.

Lee said that through the generous support of donors and with the help of staff and volunteers, the CVBS has served more than 3,300 meals and filled more than 280 hampers, representing 550 adults and children, during the Food Banks Canada HungerCount in March, 2022.

“CVBS programs are almost entirely funded by donations and we are very thankful for the ongoing community support,” he said.

“If anyone has any questions or wish to make a donation, please contact me or Henry Wikkerink at the CVBS office.”
