On June 28, six young people representing the Cowichan Valley Earth Guardians will be speaking on an online panel about youth climate activism and how being a climate activist has given them perspective and empowered them to be youth leaders.
“The Youth Behind the Movement: A Climate Activism Webinar” will be hosted by the CVEG, a local group of youth climate and social activists, and is supported by “For Our Kids”, a national network of parents concerned about climate change.
The webinar is a free event and will take place over Zoom.
Jasmine Hachey, one of the panelists for the event and a CVEG Leader-in-Training said the main purpose of the webinar is to showcase some of the youth behind the newest wave of the climate activism movement.
“Often enough I feel like adults make assumptions about who I am and the world I want for the next generations,” she said.
According to CVEG crew leader Katia Bannister, bias against youth climate activists is real, and the CVEG want to help begin to dismantle it.
“That starts with having inter-generational conversations and creating spaces for youth to represent themselves and their ideas,” she said.
The webinar will take place on June 28 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., with an additional half hour for attendees to stay online and ask questions of the panelists.
