A motor vehicle incident happened Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Evans and Jubilee Streets in downtown Duncan.

A 54-year-old man was airlifted to hospital in Victoria with a reported serious head injury after two pedestrians were struck by a truck in Duncan on Thursday afternoon.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP said the incident took place at approximately 12:24 p.m., when two men were walking toward the human resources office downtown. Near the intersection of Evans Street and Jubilee Street, they were struck by a 2012 GMC pickup. The vehicle was reportedly travelling at a very low speed, which police say may have minimized the injuries to one of the pedestrians, a 53-year-old man. He was treated and released from hospital, while the second man was airlifted to Victoria hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation has ruled out alcohol and mechanical error as contributing factors.  The driver is co-operating fully with the investigation. Cowichan Valley RCMP Victim Services have provided support to the families and those who assisted in caring for the injured at the scene.

“Police would like to remind both pedestrians and motorists to be visible and aware of their surroundings as they make their way to and from their destinations,” said RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Krista Hobday.
