On July 28, VicPD declared Afseth a high-risk missing person and called on the public to help locate him.

The 25-year-old had last been seen near Shawnigan Lake on July 26 and investigators believed he could be in the Victoria or Cowichan area. The public was asked to keep an eye out for a grey 2005 Nissan Altima with a Saskatchewan licence plate 855 IGS which Afseth was thought to be travelling in with his dog, Soma.
