Apparatus from multiple North Cowichan fire halls were called to a grass fire near the Cowichan Exhibition grounds at the base of Mount Prevost between Somenos Road and the Trans-Canada Highway.

The call came in just after 10 a.m. Friday.

South End, Crofton, and Maple Bay crews were called out and set up near 7330 Somenos Road.

“It is not on our property,” said Amanda Poelman, the exhibition ground’s office assistant. “It’s a bit too close, but it is definitely not on our property which is good because I have evacuated horses here from Ladysmith here right now.

Poelman said she believes there are nine or 10 horses at the Ex and more may join them from an equestrian centre up near the Mount Hayes fire should the that blaze continue.

Police have closed Somenos Road to traffic.

More to come as it becomes available
