Jennifer Strachan is running to be a trustee on the Cowichan Valley school board
Strachan, the mom of an elementary student in the district, said she will bring strong leadership and fresh new ideas to the role of trustee with School District #79.
She said she is relationship focused, results driven and integrity led.
“I will put kids’ needs first and seek to understand community perspective,” Strachan said.
“When needed, I believe in challenging the status quo while respecting the opinions of others. As a retired executive with the RCMP, I have an extensive corporate and government relations background. I have also gained governance experience on various non-profit boards of directors.”
Strachan said her family lives on the shores of Cowichan Lake and are involved in Lake Cowichan Minor Hockey & Baseball, Duncan Stingrays Swimming and the local community and school.
“In order to understand the many issues in the district, I feel there is a need to welcome public engagement and strive to provide answers on important educational issues,” she said.
“I strongly believe that the success of our students and schools is contingent on investing in, and valuing employees across the school district.”
Strachan said some key issues for her include having successful students by investing in all types of learners to ensure every child realizes their individual learning achievements; creating and supporting safe-school environments for kids and employees; and encouraging environments which promote equity, anti-racism and mental health awareness.
“I would also ensure the amalgamation of early learning and childcare into education receives continual oversight in its first few years,” she said.
“I also support the expansion of childcare centres to create additional spaces to support parents, and the hiring of more early childcare specialists to assist with the seamless transition of learners from childcare into early learning.”
Strachan is a member of the Students First Team.
