ICBC has released its most recent crash statistics for Vancouver Island, an online document showing where, and how many motor vehicle incidents resulting in injury, fatality, or property damage occurred in any given location between 2017 and 2021.

As one would expect, as compared to larger Island centres, the Cowichan Lake area ranked low, with 21 crashes in 2021.

In Honeymoon Bay, three crashes registered for 2021: one at Walton Road and Wordsworth Road (property damage), one at Park Avenue and South Shore Road (injury) and one at 2nd Street and South Shore Road (property damage).

There was one crash in Youbou in 2021 at the intersection of Youbou Road and Creekside Drive (injury).

In the Lake Cowichan area in 2021, 17 crashes were listed at 15 different sites, spread out over multiple locations: Greendale Road, the Highway 18 connector, Cowichan Lake Road at various intersections and South Shore Road.

Two sites, however, were the scenes of multiple crashes.

Three crashes were recorded as happening where the Cowichan Valley Highway (Highway 18) meets Skutz Falls Road. Two others were noted at the intersection of Highway 18 and Youbou Road.

In contrast, Greater Duncan had 657 crashes while Mill Bay’s 84 was the next most dangerous driving area, followed by Chemainus (77), Cobble Hill (75), Cowichan Bay (67), Shawnigan Lake (29) and Crofton (7).
