“It’s not a parade,” stresses organizer Jenn Baird of the Cowichan Lake Light-Up Cruise slated for Dec. 4. “Nobody will be walking and there won’t be any floats. Everyone needs to be in a seatbelt. Everything needs to be firmly attached.”
Baird and a couple of other Cowichan Lake area moms are setting up a car cruise for the community to enjoy quite simply “for fun” she says.
“I’m a mom. I’ve got two other moms that are helping me. Our kids need stuff to do,” she said. “We’ve lost two years of parades and events. You can’t even go see Santa at the mall this year. We really want some community spirit this season. We also really want people to go down to our local businesses in the off-season and help support them.”
That’s why the Light-Up Cruise, which begins in Youbou at 5 p.m. on Dec. 4, will wind through downtown Lake Cowichan before heading out Honeymoon Bay way, where it’ll finish around 6:30 p.m.
Brought to you by the Cowichan Lake Arts Teaching Center and Hub, would-be participants can register to join the cruise by contacting Baird at 778-767-5616 or emailing theclatchcowichan@gmail.com or visiting theclatch.com until Nov. 20.
Prizes will be awarded for best decorated vehicle.
Those wishing to enjoy the event but not decorate their vehicle are encouraged to watch from the roadside, or from the patio of their favourite local business.
“It’s just for fun,” Baird stressed. “We’re not making any money but we will collect food bank donations at the end.”
