Cowichan-Malahat-Langford MP Alistair MacGregor has been appointed as the Public Safety Critic in the NDP shadow cabinet.

MacGregor will also continue to sit as the Critic for Agriculture, and as Deputy Critic for Justice, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced on Oct. 29.

“I am honoured to accept this appointment as our party’s Critic for Public Safety,” said MacGregor.

“This is a massive federal agency responsible for national security and which coordinates the activities of the Canada Border Services Agency, Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Correctional Service of Canada, Parole Board of Canada, and the RCMP.

MacGregor said in his role as Critic for Public Safety, he is also responsible for review bodies, including the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP, the Office of the Correctional Investigator, and the RCMP External Review Committee.

“I’m looking forward to the hard work of guiding NDP policy to ensure a safe and secure Canada and strong, resilient communities,” he said.

MacGregor will also continue in his roles of Critic for Agriculture and Agri-Food and Deputy Justice Critic.

“Agriculture is a huge passion of mine,” he said.

“I appreciate having an opportunity to continue the work that I’ve done on issues related to food security and climate change while continuing to support my colleague MP Randall Garrison as Deputy Justice Critic.”

MPs are scheduled to return to Parliament on Nov. 22.
