Mike Caljouw is running for a seat at North Cowichan’s council table.

He said he cares deeply about North Cowichan and its future and, as part of council, he will have four key priorities.

Caljouw said they include a focus on core municipal issues by going back to the basics of parks and recreation, roads, sewers, and water, and pushing back on provincial and federal governments to take responsibility for issues that are theirs, not the municipality’s.

He said he would also manage public forests responsibly, and would move forward in a positive way using the results from the study of the municipal forest reserve that is underway.

“I would also balance progress and the environment by respecting our rural and agricultural roots, while recognizing the need to create a business-friendly environment to create jobs and housing for a thriving community,” Smith said.

“My fourth priority will be engaging meaningfully with the community by actively pursuing community input and involvement. I intend to do all this while keeping taxes as low as possible.”

Caljouw said he will help to build a cohesive and effective council, as he is free-thinking and open-minded and able to consider each issue on its own merit; is calm and reasonable and an active listener; a bridge builder between people with different viewpoints; and a strong team player who celebrates diversity.

“My vision for North Cowichan is a livable and affordable community where everyone is included and prosperous,” he said.

“A place where we have figured out how to respect and protect the environment, while creating a thriving economy. Where we have solved our social problems, providing real solutions to people in crisis. Where families can find a home that suits them. And our children, and their children, can continue to live in this beautiful community, not forced to move away to find meaningful work and a decent place to live.”

Caljouw said he believes this is possible.

“The hard work starts now, and I am committed to be part of this solution,” he said.

“Please vote for Mike Caljouw. Check out my Facebook page @electmikecaljouw or e-mail me at mikecaljouw2002@gmail.com. I sincerely look forward to hearing from you.”
