The opening of the new Cowichan Hospice House will be celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 22 on a Facebook live video on their page, due to the ongoing pandemic.

The approximately $10-million Cowichan Hospice House, which is located next to Duncan’s Cairnsmore Place, offers 24-hour compassionate, professional care, expert pain and symptom management and support for patients who can no longer be cared for at home, and their families.

Island Health is providing the medical care and operational costs at the 10-bed facility, and Cowichan Hospice is providing the emotional and practical support for patients.

While the Cowichan Hospice House is now open, the existing Cowichan Hospice office on Gibbins Road will remain open and continue to provide free end-of-life and grief support to individuals and families in the Cowichan region.

“We are pleased to be celebrating the opening of Cowichan Hospice House with our community in the best way we can right now, via a Facebook live video, scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m.,” said Christa Fox, chairwoman of the Cowichan Hospice House Task Force.

“Already the care at CHH is making a difference in people’s lives.”

Fox said the task force received the following note from one family member who has shared a little bit about her experience.

“…Getting my sister moved into the Cowichan Hospice House has been a huge blessing for her and for my family,” said the family member.

“It is so clear that thought and care has been put into the construction itself, the finishings, the colours. All of it is so peaceful, spacious and clean. The staff could not be more compassionate or accommodating. This is truly a gift to the community; to families like ours who must say goodbye to a loved one. Thank you.”
