The Municipality of North Cowichan issued a flood update at 7 p.m. Monday, urging residents to exercise extreme caution around high water, and heed warnings around closures and hazards.

After 24 hours of heavy rain, North Cowichan is focused on continued response and some recovery. The rain finally subsided, but heavier rain to the west is still making its way down rivers and streams, and impacting low lying areas.

The following roads in North Cowichan remain closed:

* Canada Avenue (Sherman Road to the Co-op gas station)

* Mary Street (by Bings Creek)

* Chemainus Road at the intersection of Crofton and Chemainus Roads. All access to the area is closed.

* Westholme Road by Bell McKinnon and Nimmo Road areas

* Trans Canada Highway southbound by Green Road

* Lakes Roadd at Beverly Street (detours and flaggers in place)

* Mays Road between Herd and Bell McKinnon Roads

* Mays Road south of Herd Road

* Escarpment Way

* Norcross Road between Anzio and Westcott Roads

* Tzouhalem Road from Lakes Road to Brier Road

A State of Local Emergency was declared Monday for parts of the Cowichan Valley Regional District, including North Cowichan. A reception centre for evacuated residents has been established at the Cowichan Community Centre.

Residents in low-lying areas, particularly those prone to flooding, should be prepared to evacuate at any time.

Crews will be working overnight monitoring creeks and rivers, and assessing any changes to flood conditions.
