“Outstanding service,” is the phrase that comes to mind for Quamichan School vice principal Claire Whitney when she thinks about Avalon Mearns, the Duncan Rotary Club Student of the Month for April.

“She is the absolute definition of putting others before herself,” Whitney said of Mearns.

A Grade 9 student, Mearns has been involved in countless projects at the school this year, such as the bake sale, and promotion of any school event. She never misses a leadership meeting, and always offers suggestions.

For Mearns, it’s all about contributing to the school community.

“I just feel like it’s the best thing to do for the school,” she said.

Mearns’s positivity is contagious, according to Whitney.

“You can’t be down and be around Avalon,” the vice principal said. “She sees the best in everyone. She makes the school a better place.

“She really comforts people. She really takes care of everybody.”

Mearns knows that times are tough for a lot of students and she doesn’t mind reaching out to her peers.

“So many people are struggling,” she commented.

“It’s great to do things for people who need help.”
