More than 1,200 people in the Cowichan Lake area are without power this morning, Friday, Jan. 3.

BC Hydro lists trees down across wires as the cause for several of the outage pockets, while others are listed as under investigation. Crews have been assigned to the outages.

On Thursday morning, BC Hydro spokesperson Ted Olynyk said Hydro was gearing up for possible outages due to the storm that hit Vancouver Island yesterday and has continued into Friday, causing power outages, rain, snow and ferry cancellations.

By 11:30 a.m. Olynyk said only 90 customers remained without power, and the cause of the outages was the storm. He couldn’t say when power would be back on, but said crews are working on it.

There was also an outage near Shawnigan Lake affecting 54 customers.
