Randy Doman is running for re-election to the Cowichan Valley school district’s board.

Doman said that, as a parent, he has been involved with a public school system since 2009.

He said he has volunteered in schools in a variety of roles for many years, and has been a volunteer coach with the Duncan Basketball Association and served as a member of its board for more than 30 years.

Doman said that for the last eight years, he has also served as a trustee on the Cowichan Valley’s board of education.

“I am re-running for a seat on the board because I believe all children deserve great opportunities to learn in a safe and nurturing environment,” he said.

“Having served on the board, I am well aware of the challenges that SD79 faces; challenges that include mental-health issues, inclusive-education concerns, ESL funding and ensuring all available financial resources are focused on providing meaningful classroom experiences for students.”

Doman said if re-elected, he will work for an education system that values, supports and celebrates the differences in all the district’s children, and fostering an environment where all students are treated with respect and dignity.

He said he would also move forward with initiatives to expand student options and choices in education, and focus on initiatives that improve literacy, numeracy and graduation rates.

“Although literacy and graduation rates have improved, I know we can do even better,” Doman said.

“I would also work with elders and indigenous community leaders to continue the development of strategies to support indigenous students, and collaborate with all our educational partners; including students, teachers, parents, indigenous community members, support staff and other trustees.”

Doman said the education of the district’s children is everyone’s responsibility.

“All our children deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential in a safe, nurturing and inclusive learning environment,” he said.

“I am determined to help create that opportunity for our children.”
