With school set to resume for some children come June 1, RCMP in the Cowichan Valley School District are on patrol and reminding drivers that school zone speed limits are in effect and failure to comply could result in a fine anywhere from $196 to $253, or, if speed is in excess of 40km/hr over the posted limit, from $368 to $483.

School zones are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and drivers must abide by the 30 km/hr signs.

You’ve been warned.

RCMP officers in Shawnigan Lake, Lake Cowichan and North Cowichan/Duncan will be patrolling the school zones and enforcing the speed limits when school resumes.

“We have worked tremendously hard to ensure our schools are safe and welcoming places as our students transition back to in-class instruction,” said SD79 board chair Candace Spilsbury. “We’re asking the community to do their part and abide by the posted school zone speed limits to ensure the safety of our learners outside the four walls of our schools.”
