A Salt Spring Island woman is dead and a young man is in custody.

Police were called to a home on Maliview Drive yesterday for an undisclosed incident and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) now confirms 47-year-old Heather Jones was found dead inside the home.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, but few other specifics have been released except that the incident was reported shortly before noon on Dec. 6 and the victim was known to the suspect. Following his arrest, the man was released from police custody and has been apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

Those close to the scene have identified the man as Martin Vandenberg, the son of Heather Jones.
