A fire that involved a single tree in the Caycuse area, west of Lake Cowichan, on Sunday was quickly extinguished, according to the Coastal Fire Centre.

The CFC’s Donna MacPherson said the cause of the small fire, which was extinguished by CFC personnel, is undetermined at this time, although she said there was no lightning in the region when the fire is believed to have started.

The only other wildfire of note on Vancouver Island at this time is near Port Alberni. That fire, covering less than two hectares, was reported on June 28, and is now considered under control by the CFC.

MacPherson said there is another small wildfire reported in the north Island on Sunday, and CFC personnel spent overnight working to put it out.

There were 196 active fires across B.C. as of early Monday, with at least 40 sparked over the weekend, and two-thirds of them are classified as out of control.

As of July 4, B.C. has seen 633 wildfires so far this season, mostly in the interior of the province, with 66 per cent of them determined to be human-caused.
