UPDATE: Woman airlifted with serious injuries, baby OK after crash in Nanaimo

Collision happened on Jingle Pot Road in East Wellington on Saturday afternoon

A woman was seriously injured but her baby was unharmed after a crash in Nanaimo’s East Wellington area on Saturday.

A patient was airlifted to hospital after a crash on Jingle Pot Road, near Kilpatrick Road and Meadow Drive, at about 3:30 p.m. May 23.

A Nanaimo RCMP press release notes that investigation has determined that an SUV was heading southbound prior to the crash. The 19-year-old driver “lost control of his vehicle … crossed the centre line and collided with a northbound pickup,” the release notes.

The 19-year-old female passenger of the SUV had to be extricated from the vehicle. She sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was subsequently airlifted from the meadow behind the East Wellington fire hall.

The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries and an infant who was also in the vehicle was not injured. Both were transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for observation.

The 33-year-old male driver of the pickup was not injured.

The investigation is continuing.
