A pedestrian suffered serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle on the Trans Canada Highway in Duncan on April 11.

A blue 1985 GMC pick-up truck hit a woman, 34, at the intersection on the highway in front of Burger King at approximately 6 p.m.

The woman was taken to a Victoria-area hospital where she remains in serious condition.

Jon Flatt, driving through the area at the time, witnessed the accident and was the first one to get to the woman after the crash.

Flatt said he has no idea who had the green light to proceed at the intersection, but saw the woman fly up over the hood of the pick-up truck after being struck.

“I got out and ran over to the woman and I really thought she was dead,” he said.

“She was not conscious and really banged up. She eventually woke up and began coughing and sputtering before beginning to talk and gave us her name.”

Flatt said two ambulances were on scene within minutes and immediately began emergency procedures on the woman.

Cpl. Krista Hobday from the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment said all the traffic lights on the highway were green at the time, and the woman was apparently crossing against the light.

This is disputed by at least one friend of the victim.

She said the male driver of the truck, who is 64-years old, stayed at the scene until emergency personnel arrived, and alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

“It appears he tried to avoid her, but couldn’t,” Hobday said.

“It’s not likely the driver was at fault, but we’re only in the initial stages of our investigation.”
