Kay passed away at home in Maple Bay with her family at her bedside, husband Bill and children, Bob (Mary), Kathleen (Greg) and Grant (Trish). Kay was born in Vancouver to Robert and Betty Shaw, who had emigrated from Northern Ireland. Her graduate studies were firstly at Fenton Commercial School and later at the Provincial Normal School at Vancouver. Kay taught at Maple Grove Elementary School in Vancouver. Bill and Kay, with their three children, came to the Cowichan Valley in 1964 where Kay continued her teaching at the Maple Bay Elementary School. She retired early to be just “Mom”, to bake, knit, teach local children piano and tend her gardens. Kay was active in community work as a member of IODE Duncan Dogwoods Chapter. The family held membership with the Maple Bay Yacht Club. Predeceased by her only sibling, sister Reta, Kay is survived by not only her husband, children and eight grandchildren but, also many nieces and nephews. We extend our gratitude for the kindnesses shown to Kay by the nurses and doctors of Cowichan District Hospital, the care-givers of Sunridge Place and Unique Home Health Care and to Dr. H. R. Gilbert and staff of the Coleman Clinic. A celebration of Kay’s life will be held at a later time. Funeral arrangements entrusted to First Memorial Services, Duncan, B.C.
