Arthur Henry Collins

Art was born in January 1924 in Toronto and sadly passed on September 30, 2016 in Victoria following a stroke at age 92. The third of five children growing up in Toronto; Art had to become a man at a young age with his father’s early passing. He worked at various jobs while going through school including the Toronto Star. Art enlisted in the RCAF in 1944 and learned to fly, but fortunately the war ended before Art was called overseas. While studying Commerce at the University of Toronto,Art met Catherine the love of his life and during their courtship Art completed university and went to work for Shell Oil. Art and Catherine were married in 1951and lived first in Toronto and then Vancouver where they set roots and raised four children. Art went to work for BCTV in 1961and he and the company grew. It was an exciting place and exciting times. Art retired as Vice President of Finance in 1987 at age 63. He and Catherine retired in Chemainus where they built their dream home on Fuller Lake and lived there for 25 years always welcoming family and friends to their home. It was truly a place to remember for his grandchildren. Art and Catherine moved to Berwick House in Victoria in 2013 where Art made new friends and was wonderfully cared for, especially after Catherine’s passing two years ago. Art was a car and plane enthusiast, loved learning about and keeping abreast of many things from woodworking to politics. Golf, tennis, bridge and photography were some of his pastimes. Art had a passion for the things he did and was always careful about his health, taking time to stay in shape right until his last days. In following his passions and pursuits Art made many close friends and treasured those relationships. Art was predeceased by his loving wife Catherine and will be remembered by his four children: Mark (Karen),Mary Jane,Irene (Mike) and Roy (Sherri);by eight grandchildren: Nicole, Ken,Carly,Courtney,Rob, Cate, Jay and Cassidy; and by his many friends. He was a proud and devoted husband,father,grandfather,businessman and friend. A Celebration of Art’s life will be held at the Chemainus Seniors’ Drop-In Centre at 1:30 pm on Sunday,November 20,2016.
