Kay passed peacefully on Boxing Day morning in her 97th year. She was predeceased by her parents, all of her eight siblings and their spouses and in 1983, by her loving husband of 42 years, Carl Harald Carlson. She is survived by her sons Gordon W. (Wendy), Thomas H. (Jean) and James W. (Wendy) Carlson, grandchildren Carla (Darren) Smith, Gordon Jr. (Tara), Garey (Chelsea), Gregory (Mandy), Christopher (Avril), William (Kelly) and Jeanette (Craig) Kuziemsky, Edward (Rhonda) and Candace (Graham) Smith plus 19 great-grandchildren. Mom is also survived by her niece Heather Matson (the daughter she never had) who took such special care of her during the past few years. She is also survived by her many nieces, nephews, throughout the world.

Kay was born in Ballylummin, N. Ireland, from where she immigrated with her family to Onoway, AB in 1927. There she completed her formal schooling before moving to Duncan with her family. During the War years she married Carl and settled in Lake Cowichan to help raise their 3 sons. After the boys grew up, Kay worked as a cook in most of the restaurants in Lake Cowichan before joining the local Canada Post office as a Postal Clerk from where she retired.

Mom was one of the first residents in Evergreen Place in Lake Cowichan where she lived for many years and created a place of "old country hospitality," good food and lots of fun. Kay was a welcoming, kind and generous hostess who always had time for visitors and an extra plate at dinner or a spare bedroom. She also traveled a great deal as her greatest pleasures were visiting family and friends.

Special thanks to the nurses and staff at Cowichan District Hospital and the Chemainus Healthcare Centre for their kind and loving care of mom.

A graveside service for family will be held 11 am, January 4, 2019 at Mountain View Cemetery, North Cowichan followed by a Celebration of Life at the Lake Cowichan Christian Fellowship Church, 10 King George Street, Lake Cowichan at 1 pm.
