May 26, 1950 - March 17, 2020
Danny entered the world in Elk Point, Alberta, the sixth and final child of Norman Young and his wife Mary, nee Hankins, both deceased, and began a journey of trials, triumphs, and adventures spanning nearly seventy years.
His working life encompassed such diverse occupations as Telegraph Delivery, Ranch Hand, high producing Rigging Slinger in the West Coast woods, Bartender and Plasterer, as a valued employee and as proprietor of Superior Stucco.
He was proud of being the best he could at whatever he did, and was skilled in many things, on the job and in his life in general. He rode horses (to school in Alberta and on the ranch in the B.C. Interior) and freight trains, played harmonica in a local band, studied music at Malaspina College (now VIU) and classical guitar with a private tutor out of UVIC, pursued Jungian Psychology, dabbled in woodworking, wood carving and boat building, made beer, marmalade, bread and prize-winning pie, in his fifties learned to use a computer (essential for keeping tabs on the Canucks!) and became an avid motorcyclist in his sixties.
Danny met Kim, nee Joyce, in Duncan in 1970, where they married two years later. Their son Zack arrived in 1973, and their grandsons Bailey and Aiden Young in 1997 and 1999, filling his life with joy.
He was predeceased by sisters Linda Hankins and Sandra Gallagher, brother Brian Young, Brian's son Kevin St. Arnaud, brother in-law Jamie Joyce, sister in-law Lindsay Lee, parents in-laws Norman (Bud) Joyce and Frances Joyce and favorite cousin Kerry Hankins.
Left to carry on without him are his wife Kim, son Zack, grandsons Bailey and Aiden; their mother Patti Ettinger and his siblings, Nora Henschke, Eddy Young, Kevin Cameron, sisters in-law Dolores Young and Jacqui Thompson, brothers in-law John Hankins and Conn Joyce and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and great- grand nieces, as well as friends from all walks of life and many parts of the world.
Danny was a loving and intensely loyal husband, father, grandfather and friend, witty, compassionate and honest to his core, he leaves a huge void in the lives of family and friends. He will be missed by employers, employees, co-workers, and his beloved guitars and Harley Davidson.
Kim and Zack wish to express our gratitude and admiration to his medical team in Victoria General, Royal Jubilee Hospital and here in Duncan for their kindness and expertise, especially Drs. Bascu, Attewell, Metcalf, Wilhelm, his G.P. Dr. Robinson and last but far from least, Dr. Masuda.
We also want to thank all the friends and relatives who gave so much help and support throughout Danny's year long struggle with cancer, especially Gary Henslowe.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
