May 15, 1961 - February 8, 2023
In loving memory ~
Dave was born on May 15, 1961, in Mayo, Yukon and passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on February 8, 2023. He is predeceased by his brother Sam, father Tom, mother Anne, and his beloved dogs Fáfnir, Buddy, Kaz, Otis, and the cat who thought he was a dog, Romeo.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife Catherine, his five children, Amie (Russ), Nick, Dana (Carly), Teagan (Jess), and Breanne (Dustin), his seven grandchildren, Ryder, Violet, Vernon, Hazel, Quinn, Millie, and Brooks, his three sisters Patricia (John), Conni, and Jennifer (Ron), as well as his many nieces and nephews.
With a great love for the outdoors, Dave spent most of his time hunting, fishing, camping, and causing trouble with his friends as he grew up. From age 6, Lacrosse was a huge part of Dave's life. In 1999, he helped resurrect the sport within the community as a founding member of the Cowichan Valley Lacrosse Association before serving as the president for several years. Dave thoroughly enjoyed coaching multiple teams and even started the River Rats, where his teammates quickly became his brothers.
Dave had the ability to find humour in every situation and his positive personality was contagious to everyone he met. He loved to share his wisdom and knowledge with others and was an expert in many areas, including outdoor survival, Canadian history, and all things electrical. Starting to work for HB Electric in 1986, Dave eventually bought the business in 2009 and successfully ran it until passing the torch to Mark Cunnah in 2022.
Above all else, Dave loved his family and friends deeply. He was our protector, coach, best friend, and hero. In the toughest of times, Dave would be there telling us to "soldier on", which is exactly what he did until the end.
We'd like to thank Dr. Ibrahim, Dr. Pewarchuk, the nurses in the Cancer Clinic, the Cowichan District Hospital staff in Emergency and on the 2nd floor, Mann's Pharmacy, and the team at Hospice House for the kindness and compassion they showed Dave throughout his journey.
Please join us in celebrating Dave's life on Saturday, February 25th at the Cowichan Community Centre. The Celebration of Life will be held in the Multi-Purpose Hall from 1-3 p.m., followed by drinks and conversation.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you please consider becoming a blood donor.
