Our precious Derek was tragically taken from us; our hearts are broken and filled with sadness.

Derek leaves behind his parents Brenda & Steve Smith, Paul Descoteau. Sister, Paula & Nate Phillips (Farrah & Cooper) Dustin’s Children, Austin, Steven, Isabella & Kaleb Descoteau. Grandparents Ray & Irene Ellison and Alice Descoteau.

Derek is predeceased by his brother Dustin Descoteau, grandfather Paul Descoteau and great grandmothers Jean McPherson & Violet Carlson. Derek will be missed by numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins from the Ellison, Descoteau & Smith families.

Derek was an amazing young man with so many ambitions and dreams, so sweet & caring, truly one of a kind. He touched the hearts of everyone he met, always a smile on his face and a laugh that was unforgettable.

His passion for vehicles was known to all, he was so proud of every vehicle he had and shared his passion with everyone he met. He always told his mom that Dustin was guiding him and teaching him the mechanics from up above. I know Dustin would be proud of all his burn outs!

Derek attended Alex Aitken School, Quamichan and graduated in 2013 from Cowichan Senior Secondary school.

Derek was a hard & respected worker at Western Forest Products in Cowichan Bay and a joy to work beside. His first loved job was at Just Jake’s.

His love for his dog that he recently adopted showed how caring of a man he was, he told his mom that he needed someone to love and “Harvey” needed him to love. Derek would be so proud of Robert and Kaylee for adopting his boy.

Derek had just met a very special girl, Janelle Guyatt, he was in a very happy place, and he adored her.

Derek loved all of his friends; he was always there to lend a shoulder, give a hug, encourage, support and always trying to make them laugh, they say he was the life of the party!

Derek excelled in any sport he played, football, baseball, soccer, lacrosse and mountain biking.

Derek will be sadly missed by all his family, relatives & friends.

It’s a comfort to know that Derek is in the arms of his big brother Dustin.

A celebration of life will be held on what was supposed to be his 21st Birthday. Sunday, June 26, 2016 , Birds Eye Cove Farm 5881 Genoa Bay Rd. 1:30 – 4:30
