Donald Delmer Sked

December 20, 1949 - December 9, 2021
Donald Delmer Sked passed away at Cowichan District Hospital, in Duncan, BC at the age of 71.
He will be lovingly remembered by his spouse, Linda Sked (nee Harknett); sons: Syd (Eiko), Joel; daughter Shannon Naylor (Colin); grandchildren: Marissa Wellmer, Sage Moisan, Olivia Naylor, Suzuna Sked, Kailea Sked, Rayne Sked, Hannah Sked, Akira Sked; great-granddaughter Scarlett Krisby; and sister, Donalda Sked.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Walter (Don) Sked and Norah (nee Tyner) Sked, as well as by his loving sister, Maureen Fleming.
Born in Duncan, Don went to school at Brentwood Boys School and Cowichan Senior Secondary School. After leaving school, he worked on a tree-planting crew, and at some local sawmills until being hired at the BCFP sawmill in Youbou, where he worked at various jobs in the veneer plant, and in the sawmill.
Don started going to the Youth Group at Brae Road Gospel Chapel, where he met Linda. Don and Linda were married on August 24th, 1973, and lived in Duncan, where their three children were born. Soon after the youngest was born, they moved to Youbou to be closer to Don's work. It was close enough that Don usually walked to work, no matter the weather.
During this time, the family continued their attendance at their church home, Brae Road Gospel Chapel. The children graduated and moved away and Don continued his trek to the mill. When the Youbou sawmill closed in 2001, after some time of regrouping, Don moved to Alberta to try his hand at trucking. Finding that not to be to his liking, Don then worked at a lumber remanufacturing company in Edmonton.
Once he was settled into this job, Linda moved to Alberta to join him, where they resided in an area called Waugh, near Legal, Alberta. They attended Sturgeon Alliance in Gibbons, Alberta, and then moved to their 'church home away from home', Clareview Gospel Chapel in Edmonton.
Linda started work at an industrial supply company in Edmonton, and Don moved to a tire recycling plant in Legal. In 2016, after losing her health & safety job, Linda moved back to Vancouver Island for work. Don retired from Liberty Recycling in late 2016 and in June 2017 moved back to Vancouver Island to join Linda.
Don soon established a retirement routine in Lake Cowichan. He walked at least 5 km twice a day, and made himself useful to the community by picking up discarded cans and bottles on his walks, taking them to be recycled. During his walks, Don met and chatted with many community folks along the way.
On October 1st, Don fell and suffered brain trauma and was in a coma for over 6 weeks. Don rallied to a point, making eye contact and trying to speak with family members, but his injuries were too severe and he fell back into a coma. Don was released into the loving arms of his Lord and Saviour on the morning of December 9, 2021.
