Doreen Hykawy (Jenner) passed away peacefully in Duncan on September 16th, 2021 at the age of 96 years. She was born on August 1st, 1925 in Victoria BC to Jane Elizabeth (Jenny) and Henry Jenner and was an only child.
Doreen was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Steve on July 19th, 2009.
She will be greatly missed by her daughter Linda (Gordon) and son Dennis (Sharon), four grandchildren Tracy (Steve), Alex (Andy), Paul (Sandy) and Rhonda, 6 great grandchildren, one great great grandson and she missed meeting her great great granddaughter by 4 days.
She will be fondly remembered by many other family and friends.
Doreen grew up in Duncan where she met and married Steve and this is where they chose to raise their family. Doreen and Steve started building houses on weekends. After Steve retired it became a full-time job for both of them. They were a great team; Doreen always worked hard with the building and painted all of the houses.
Doreen and Steve liked to be self sufficient, they had a large vegetable garden and could be found every summer out on their boat fishing. Her freezer was the envy of everyone, always full to the brim with vegetables and fish. She was also famous for her Sunday Family Dinners of Prime Rib, Yorkshire pudding and Shrimp salad.
Doreen was very active. She loved to go walking, square dancing, playing cards, travelling and telling jokes. They made many a trip in their trailer across the prairies to visit Steve's family in Manitoba and for over 25 years spent their winter vacation in Hawaii.
They also enjoyed numerous cruises, exploring the world. Doreen loved Reno and playing the slot machines. When she could no longer travel, she started to play bingo. She loved any game of chance and she was lucky.
Doreen was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease at age 65. As with everything in her life she took it in stride and didn't let it slow her down. She always carried a smile on her face and a cheery outlook on life.
Her final years were spent at Sunridge Place in Duncan, where she loved to be a part of all the social activities offered, from singing to wheelchair bowling. She would play the piano each morning while she was able.
The family would like to extend our greatest appreciation for all the love and care showed Doreen over the years she lived at Sunridge. To all of the nurses, care aides, administration and everyone on the Sunridge Team we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
A Memorial Service will be held at later date.
