January 15, 1943 - September 12, 2018
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Winter, who left us on September 12, 2018 at the Cowichan District Hospital with his family at his side.
Gary leaves behind his loving wife of 51 years, Maureen, son Trevor (Julie) and his grandsons Max and Jake. Also left to mourn are his four brothers, Stewart, Allan (Caroline), John, and David (Joanna), along with his many nieces, nephews, in-laws and close friends.
Born in Victoria, to parents Gordon and Isabella, Gary later moved to the Cowichan Valley. He was an avid swimmer in his youth and always had a passion for fishing. He went to high school in Lake Cowichan, then got his carpentry ticket with an apprenticeship at the Crofton Mill, where he retired in 1999 after over 35 years. In retirement, Gary was happiest plugging away in his workshop or in the yard, gardening and landscaping. He also enjoyed proudly watching his grandsons playing hockey and baseball. Gary always loved all kinds of fishing. He had so many fond memories of camping & fishing trips with his brothers and buddies. In recent years, he took to fresh water fishing in his little tin boat.
Those who knew Gary, loved the guy. He was painstakingly meticulous, but that is because he appreciated the value in doing things properly. That is represented in so many of our homes by the numerous pieces of furniture that Gary has built over the years. He was also known for his Scottish stubbornness. He liked to keep things simple, and he did things on his own terms; in life, and ultimately in his death.
Gary never wanted people to fuss about him. So, in honour of his wishes, there will be no service. He would rather you hug your friends and family and would want you to know that he is reunited with his folks, surrounded by his dogs, and listening to some Johnny Cash. Who knows, the man in black just might be tipping a rusty nail with him right now.
In lieu of flowers, take a friend fishing.
