It is with much sadness we announce that George passed away September 13, 2016 peacefully at home surrounded with the love of family; after his brave battle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Maude Smith and his brothers Tony and John. Survived by Lynda, wife of 37 years, and sons Tony (Shelly) and Greg (Tia). Grandchildren Ethan, Jonas, Mariah, Alexis, Emma and Cameron, whom he cherished and adored. Also survived by brothers Joe (Sheila) and Bob (Sue), sisters Pat (Mike), Margaret, Susan (Steve) and Jan (Martin) as well as sisters-in-law Margaret and Marie. George was born in England and moved to Canada at the age of 17 in 1974. He apprenticed at Gary Hawe’s as an Auto Body Technician – branching out later to open his own A-1 Auto Body Shop. He later contracted out to B.C. Hydro treating poles. This enabled him to travel throughout much of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands enjoying the variety of people and places along the way. He took pleasure playing darts at the Legion for several years. Later in his life he enjoyed staying close to home. George had a great love of animals and will be missed by Giz, Gus, Rose and all the other furry friends he’s made over the years. He had a great sense of humour and a very kind heart. He will be missed! In keeping with George’s wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to a charity of your choice. Special thanks to Dr. Masuda, Dr. Gustafson, Dr. Heard and Dr. Roy of Duncan and Dr. B. Sanders and Dr. Flinn of Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. Also thanks to Dr. Rauw and the staff involved in his care at the Victoria Cancer Clinic. We will never forget how they treated George with such compassion and kindness. Thanks to all the people at Med Pro Respiratory Care, Motion Specialties Medical Equipment, all the Home Care Nurses, and Home and Community Care respite caregivers. Thanks also to Shelly from Hospice, and Laura from Occupational Therapy. Thanks to the wonderful staff at Save On Pharmacy for your great service and kindness to George. Thank you to all those who helped George during his illness and to our friends and family for all their love and support. Arrangements entrusted to Sands Funeral Chapel Duncan.
