February 17, 1944 - November 17, 2018
John worked on the waterfront as a longshoreman for 17 years and as a longshore foreman for another 27 while in the employment of Westcan Terminals, Cowichan Bay.

As a longtime resident of Cobble Hill, John was actively involved in the community helping to build paths and trails as well as the Cleasby Bike Park, the Dog Park and the Train Station Park all at the base of Cobble Hill Mountain. He also helped renew the Cobble Hill Cenotaph and worked on the Cobble Hill Common along with a variety of other community projects. Born in Victoria, John was the eldest child of Vic and Betty Giles. His

brothers and sisters include Mike, Jim (Debbie), Dianne, Tim (Brenda) and Sherri (Dave) Conway. John had several nieces and nephews. John is sadly missed by his loving wife of 50 years, Gerry, and their three sons: Rick, Ray and Len (Wren) along with their three grandchildren Kailey, Gavin and Emmaly.

As the poem "The Dash" says when it speaks of the years between our birth and our death,

"It matters not how much we own;

The cars, the house, the cash,

What matter is how we live and love

And how we spend our dash."

John spent his dash exceptionally well!
