February 5, 1947 - February 17, 2021
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our friend and brother, John Walter Miller Stiles on February 17, 2021. John passed away peacefully in the morning, surrounded by his wife and children (in person and virtually) following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
John was born in Windsor, Ontario on February 5, 1947, the third of the five sons of George Stanley & Gladys Mae (Chapman) Stiles. His parents and two of his brothers, Ron and Bob, predeceased him. John married his sweetheart, Carol-Anne Noella Marie Wood, on July 4th, 1968 in the Cardston Alberta Temple.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and six children: Camin (Pam) Stiles and Cara (Richard) Light in the Cowichan Valley, Corissa Stiles in Ladysmith, Caden (Rebecca) Stiles in Winnipeg, MB, Carleen (Chris) Mandwe in Cowichan Valley and Cayla (Sean) Clark in Victoria; as well as 14 grandchildren.
John was a man of many skills, and he was happiest when using them in service to his family and his friends. His love affair with trains and stringed instruments was no secret to those who have known him for any length of time. He took great pride in sharing the railway he built in their back garden.
John was a talented musician and had a beautiful tenor voice. He participated in Church choirs and several local music-minded groups. He entertained often at the Cowichan Folk Guild with many of the instruments he had manufactured. He really believed that music was the "universal language" and put this in practice especially while serving an 18 month, Humanitarian mission for his church with Carol in Slovakia in 2011.
A Celebration of Life service will be held for John on Friday August 13th at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 1815 Tzouhalem Rd. in Duncan.
